SOBRELEC
Totus

Extremely rare french portable computer!

Sobrelec was based in Bretagne, near Brest (France). It was founded by Marcel Richard, former Thomson engineer, in 1974. They used to produce goods for Thomson or Marine Nationale (french Navy). They also produced the LX-500 and LX-525 computers for Logabax.

At the Sicob 1982 exhibition they presented their first own computer : the Totus. It is luggable system, quite similar to the Osborn 1, with a bigger screen though, and two 370 KB 5.25'' built-in disk drives.

Apparently it was mainly used by accountants in Bretagne, while moving from farms to farms.

We need more info about this computer ! If you designed, used, or have more info about this system, please send us pictures or anything you might find useful.
Please consider donating your old computer / videogame system to Old-Computers.com or one of our partners from anywhere in the world (Europe, America, Asia, etc.).

The ''transportable'' computer, presented by SOBRELEC, got 4 stars at ''SICOB'' show (equivalent to NCC, National Computer Conference). I''am the designer of this computer, in
my company named MIO (Micro Informatique Ouest), located at "La Fonderie", Plouneventer 29230. This idea came after a trip to NCC in LA, CA, where I saw OSBORNE : I thought the screen was too small, and decided for a 9" screen.

The main computer card was derivated from Logabax LX500 ( I designed in 1988), a well known computer sold as 6000 samples to french National Education.

Hello,

I was a trainee at Sobrelec in 1982. I remember well this computer. The processor was a Z80 at 4Mhz (the maximum possible). The problem was that it was very heavy (not far from 20 kg) which made it "transportable" instead of "portable". But it was a "revolution" in 1982. I remember also that the last models of them had a "tactile" screen. This was made by "light cells" located around the screen.

The keyboard was the cover of the box and contained the handle of the computer.

Thank you to have found it and to have taken of picture of it !

With kind regards
Régis Le Boité
