The most famous and strong feature of the X1 series is Programmable Charactor Generator (PCG).
The X1-D has a 3" disk drive built-in instead of the tape recorder of the original X1 system. The X1-D lacks the tape interface remote control of the X1 serie, so most tape software couldn't be used with it.
This incompatibility with the others X1 systems was a big flaw, but a clever user (japanese of course) modified its X1D board to make it compatible, and named his new computer X1DX for "Deluxe". Many other users followed him and did the same...
Tape Basic and Disk Basic were available but had to be loaded from disk (Sharp's "clean computer" concept).
The "S-OS" operating system was created by monthly magazine "Oh! MZ" (Soft bank
publishing) in 1984. "S-OS" committee designed commom IOCS specs. to be able
to share application programs among diffrent systems. S-OS have been converted to all MZ series, MSX ,PC-8800 series,FM-7 series and X68000 with backing support of many readers who created many application & games on "S-OS".
